# Covers vs Seats
## Covers are the amount of customers involved in a transaction.
**Covers:** Every transaction counts towards the number of covers. Covers can be assigned at the time of opening a table, and can be edited whilst transacting against the table by using the “Covers” function and the numeric keypad.
Over the counter transactions, and tabs also contribute towards covers, as each transaction will count as 1 cover.
**Adding covers to checks**
It is now possible in Impos to add covers to all check types in Impos.
NOTE: the cover prompt is still only available when seating tables.
If you want to add a covers count to normal orders or tabs you must add the covers function to the menu through the Impos Back Office software.
*Adding Covers to a Check*
You can add covers to any check that you have open in Impos Front Office.
When the check is open in Impos Front Office, you enter the number of covers on the number pad:
Followed by the covers function button. The covers will then be applied to the currently open check.
**Seats:** A seat number is typically associated with a particular position on a table. This is used to determine which person on the table would be consuming the item.
Covers are used to determine the number of people served in a service period, and are used to calculate spend per head figures. Seats are used to ensure the right food goes to the right person on a table and should not be used to calculate Spend per head.
